Why use Botox® for chronic migraine?
Botox® is a licensed preventive treatment for chronic migraine in the UK and Ireland. Clinical studies have shown that, in appropriately selected patients, it can significantly reduce the number of migraine days per month and improve quality of life.
Individual responses vary, and some patients may require two or three treatment cycles before experiencing the full benefit.

Who is it for?
You may be suitable for Botox® if you:
- Have chronic migraine, defined as 15 or more headache days per month, with at least 8 days having migrainous features.
- Have tried at least three preventive migraine treatments that have been ineffective, not well tolerated, or are unsuitable.
- Are 18 years of age or older.
How does it work?
Botox® is injected into specific muscle areas of the head and neck. It works by blocking pain signals, reducing muscle tension, and calming overactive nerve endings.
Treatments are given every 12 weeks, and benefits often improve over time.
Expected Benefits
- Fewer migraine days each month.
- Reduced need for acute migraine medications, including pain relievers and triptans.
- Improved sleep, energy levels and concentration.
- Better quality of life and day-to-day functioning.
Many patients notice improvement after their second or third treatment cycle, although some experience benefit sooner. Individual responses vary, and not everyone will experience the same degree of improvement.
Is Botox® Safe?
Yes. Botox® has been extensively tested and is approved for this use.
However, you should inform us if you:
- Are you pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a muscle or nerve condition
- Are allergic to Botox®

Our Clinical Insight
Botox® is an established preventive treatment for chronic migraine in patients who have not responded adequately to oral preventive medications or who have been unable to tolerate them.
Treatment is usually repeated every 12 weeks. The benefits often build over successive treatment cycles, and some patients experience greater improvement after the second or third treatment.
Clinical studies have shown that BOTOX® can reduce the number of migraine days and improve quality of life in appropriately selected patients. Individual responses vary, and not everyone will experience the same degree of benefit.
